Sarsaparilla contains sarsasapogenin, sitosterol, stigmasterol, and pollinastanol; and the saponins sarsasaponin, sarsaparilloside, among others. Astilbin, neoastilbin, isoastilbin, and neoisoastilbin are flavonoids isolated from the rhizome of sarsaparilla. Smilaxin is a protein with immunostimulatory, antiproliferative, and HIV-1-reverse transcriptase inhibitory activities from sarsaparilla rhizomes.
