Aframomum Melegueta -- The effects of aqueous extracts of Aframomum
melegueta and Piper guineense on the sexual behavior of male rats were studied,
considering many criteria, such as penile erection, copulatory behaviour and
orientation activities towards themselves (genital grooming) and female rats (ano-genital
sniffing, mounting). For 8 days different groups of rats received a daily
administration of distilled water (control) or a plant extract: A. melegueta at
115 mg/kg or P. guineense at 122.5 mg/kg. Both plant extracts stimulated male
sexual behaviour. In fact, A. melegueta and P. guineense significantly increased
penile erection index, and the frequencies of intromission and ejaculation.
These plant extracts were found to enhance the orientation of males towards
females by increasing mounting and ano-genital investigatory behavior. Results
of this study showed that A. melegueta and P. guineense modified the sexual
behaviour of male rats by increasing sexual arousal.

Bois bandé -- Bois bandé is the name commonly used in a large part of the
Caribbean for the tree Roupala montana. The plant is not only found in
Grenada and Trinidad, but also in Dominica, where it is known as gimauve or
gommier tree and in Costa Rica it is known as danto amarillo or zorillo. The
bark of this tree is famous for its aphrodisiac properties. Locals soak a strip
of the bark for a week in rum, then filter the rum and take a small glass of the
extract. The extract is also known as macoucherie rum. No studies are available
in the Western literature to give us any clues on this herb’s properties or
mechanism of action. Bois bandé is available as a liquid and capsules.

Cat's claw uncaria tomentosa. A vine from the amazon river basin, extracts from the bark, effective
antioxidant, potent inhibitor of TNFalpha. Cat's claw is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. The species, U
guianensis and U tomentosa are equiactive. They are effective antioxidants, but
their anti-inflammatory properties may result from their ability to inhibit
TNFalpha and to a lesser extent PGE2 production.
Prevents MCF breast cancer. Uncaria tomentosa total alkaloids exert a beneficial effect on memory
impairment induced by the dysfunction of cholinergic systems in the brain. Cat's claw protects cells against oxidative stress and negated the activation
of NF-kappaB. These studies provide a mechanistic evidence for the widely held
belief that cat's claw is an effective anti-inflammatory agent.

Chuchuhuasi --
Chuchuhuasi or chuchuwasi is
a common name for some members of the genus Maytenus (belonging to the
Celastraceae family), found in Peru and Colombia. An infusion of the bark is
used not only as a famed aphrodisiac but also as a proven muscle relaxant and a
remedy for rheumatism. You can either follow the recipe of the Peruvian shiphibo
tribe: soak the bark overnight in, e.g. cane liquor (any strong alcoholic drink
will do) and drink the infusion, or do as the Siona indians in Colombia: boil a
5 cm piece of the trunk in 2 l of water until the volume has been reduced to 1
l. Drink a small cupful of this 3 times a day for a week, then! The active
constituents might be maytansine, maytenin, mebeverine and the triterpenes
tingenone, 22-hydroxytingenone and pristimeran (admit it! these names sounds
very physiologically active!). The most useful species are Maytenus krukovii,
M. eberifolia (=M. macrocarpa = M. laevis) and M.
ilicifolia.

DIMETHYLGLYCINE is an anti-stress nutrient with antioxidant properties.
Recently, studies have implicated the generation of oxygen-derived free radicals

Echinacea common cold
helper? jury hasn't made the decision: they're out sick.
ECHINACEA Echinacea purpurea E. angustifolia E. pallida Safe in pregnancy. Used in common cold, coughs, bronchitis. German commission E has approved the
oral use of the above ground parts of E. pupurea for colds, respiratory tract
infections, and urinary tract infections and its topical use for poorly healing
wounds. The fresh or dried E. pallida root has been approved for use in the
treatment of influenza-like infections. Treatment with Echinacea Plus tea at
early onset of cold or flu symptoms was effective for relieving these symptoms
in a shorter period of time than a placebo. Natural killer cells from aging mice
treated with extracts from Echinacea purpurea are quantitatively and
functionally rejuvenated. Ineffectiveness of echinacea for prevention of
experimental rhinovirus colds. May worsen allergic reactions. Recurrent erythema nodosum associated with
Echinacea herbal therapy. This first prospective study suggests that gestational
use of echinacea during organogenesis is not associated with an increased risk
for major malformations. Echinacea, the popular herbal remedy that is purported to strengthen the
immune system and fight infection, may cause mild or serious allergic reactions
in people who use the herb to treat their allergy symptoms, according to two
Australian researchers.

Feverfew for migraine.
FEVERFEW The Yale team found that feverfew's active ingredient--parthenolide--specifically
binds to and inhibits the protein IKK-beta, which plays a role in the body's
inflammatory process. Fever is part of the body's inflammatory response, and
inflammation contributes to a range of ailments--including migraines,
researchers believe. Crews pointed out that IKK-beta has been identified as a drug target only
within the last few years. And, he said, while the pharmaceutical industry has
conducted "massive research" for compounds that will target IKK-beta and its
"pathway" in the body, the search has reached a bottleneck. 100 to 300 mg up to qid, 0.2 to 0.4% parthenolide

Garcinia Cambogia for
stomach ulcers?
GARCINIA CAMBOGIA Garcinia cambogia extract is a herbal preparation that has been suggested as
useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. In the present study this
drug was tested for its antiulcerogenic effect. Oral pretreatment with Garcinia
cambogia fruit extract (1 g/kg body wt/day) for 5, 10 or 15 days protected the
gastric mucosa against the damage induced by indomethacin (20 mg/kg body wt).
The volume and acidity of the gastric juice decreased in the pretreated rats.
The glycoprotein levels of the gastric contents which were decreased in the
untreated rats, maintained near normal levels in the pretreated rats. Protein
which was elevated in the gastric juice of untreated rats, showed near normal
levels in the pretreated rats. Garcinia cambogia was able to decrease the
acidity and to increase the mucosal defence in the gastric areas, thereby
justifying its use as an antiulcerogenic agent.

Green tea a cup a day
keeps the doctor away.
GREEN TEA camellia sinensis. Antiplatelet activity of green tea catechins is mediated by inhibition of
cytoplasmic calcium increase. Consumption of green tea was associated with lower serum concentration of
total cholesterol in Japanese healthy workers age 40-69 years; however, green
tea consumption was unrelated to serum HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
We conclude that some green tea catechins are chondroprotective and that
consumption of green tea may be prophylactic for arthritis and may benefit the
arthritis patient by reducing inflammation and slowing cartilage breakdown.
Further studies will be required to determine whether these compounds access the
joint space in sufficient concentration and in a form capable of providing
efficacy in vivo.
EGCg targets multiple MMP-mediated cellular events in cancer cells and provides
a new mechanism for the anticancer properties of that molecule.
Understanding the basic principles by which EGCG inhibits tumour invasion and
angiogenesis may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies, in
addition to supporting the role of green tea as a cancer chemopreventive agent.Taken together, the results suggest that EGCG has protective effects against
betaA-induced neuronal apoptosis through scavenging reactive oxygen species,
which may be beneficial for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
These results indicate that dietary administration of the green tea extract
catechins at high doses induced goiters in rats, and this may be due to
antithyroid effects of catechins. These data suggest that green tea has preventive effects on both chronic
inflammatory diseases and lifestyle-related diseases (including cardiovascular
disease and cancer), resulting in prolongation of life span. Flavanol (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate is shown to be a potent natural
inhibitor of leukocyte elastase that may be used to reduce elastase-mediated
progression to emphysema and tumor invasion. Has epicatechin, epigallocatechin and other polyphenolic compounds.

LICORICE Dietary consumption of licorice-root extract by hypercholesterolemic patients
may act as a moderate hypocholesterolemic nutrient and a potent antioxidant
agent and, hence against cardiovascular disease. Glycyrrhizin, an aqueous extract of licorice root, has anti-inflammatory
activity and has been used for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis.
Glycyrrhizin inhibited the cytolytic activity of complement via the activation
of both the classical and alternative pathways, while it had no effect on immune
adherence, suggesting that it blocks C5 or a later stage of the complement
cascade. Further analysis revealed that glycyrrhizin inhibits the lytic pathway
in which the membrane attack complex (MAC) is formed. This mechanism suggests
that glycyrrhizin may prevent tissue injury caused by MAC not only in chronic
hepatitis but in many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The ingestion of liquorice, and/or its active metabolites, can sometimes
produce an acquired form of apparent mineralocorticoid excess (AME) syndrome,
expressed as sodium retention, potassium loss and suppression of the
renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, in addition to clinical consequences such
as raised blood pressure and oedema. These results demonstrate a stimulative effect of GR on the mouse defense
system(s) against HSV-1 infection. Glycyrrhizin, an active component of licorice roots, reduces morbidity and
mortality of mice infected with lethal doses of influenza virus.

PETASITES HYBRIDUS 60 such patients received randomly either the Petasites preparation(50 mg
BID) or placebo for 12 weeks. A total of 33 patients were allocated to the drug
group and 27 patients to the placebo group. In all, 58 patients completed the
study. Compared to placebo, Petasites hybridus significantly reduced the
frequency of migraine attacks and days with migraine per month as well as the
frequency of accompanying symptoms(p less than 0.05). Petasites hybridus reduced
the frequency of attacks by 46% after 4 weeks, 60% after 8 weeks and 50% after
12 weeks of treatment (placebo group: 24%, 17% and 10%, respectively). No
adverse drug reactions were reported in either the drug or placebo group. The
efficacy and excellent tolerability of the Petasites hybridus extract observed
in this study suggest that this plant preparation can be of clinical benefit to
migraine patients.

Policias fruticosum --
Dinh lang (Polycias fruticosum L.) root extract (DLRE)
was found to have a pharmacological spectrum similar to Ginseng. Experimental
and clinical studies have shown a wide range of pronounced stimulatory effects
of DLRE which showed low toxicity. It increases mental and physical performance.
This study is devoted to demonstrate the effect of DLRE on sexual performance of
male rats. Different age-cohorts of Wistar male rats [6-8 months old (n = 204),
16-18-months old (n = 240) and 22-24 month old (n = 122)], were used for these
experiments. The rats of each age cohort were divided into 4 groups. One group
received saline, others were treated with various doses of DLRE daily. Treatment
started 10 days before the screening test and continued during the test period.
DLRE reduced the percentage of non-copulators in the aged rats compared to the
younger ones. In the aged rats DLRE transformed high percentage of sluggish rats
to sexually fully active animals. In sexually fully active 6-8 months old rats
the percentage of rats displaying ejaculation with the second female was found
to be significantly higher in DLRE-treated males. Also the recovery of the
sexually exhausted male rats proved to be faster in DLRE-treated groups.

Terminalia catappa -- Tropical almond is a large deciduous stately tree,
originally from India, growing up to 90 feet. It thrives as an ornamental tree
in many tropical cities in the world. In Taiwan the fallen leaves of tropical
almond are used as a herbal drug in the treatment of liver related diseases. The
leaves contain agents for chemoprevention of cancer and probably have
anticarciogenic potential. The kernel of Indian almond has shown aphrodisiac
activity; it can probably be used in treatment of some forms of sexual
inadequacies (premature ejaculation).

(SS) in 1% methyl cellulose in rats. Male rats were orally treated with
1,500 mg/kg or 3,000 mg/kg SS or vehicle, and their sexual behaviour was
monitored 3 h later using a receptive female. Another group of rats was orally
treated with either 3,000 mg/kg SS or vehicle for 7 consecutive days. Their
sexual behaviour and fertility were evaluated on days 1, 4 and 7 of treatment
and day 7 post-treatment by pairing overnight with a pro-oestrous female.
RESULTS: The 1,500 mg/kg dose, had a marked aphrodisiac action (prolongation of
ejaculation latency) but no effect on libido (% mounting, % intromission and %
ejaculation), sexual vigour (mounting-and-intromission frequency), or sexual
performance (intercopulatory interval). In contrast, the higher dose (3,000
mg/kg) reversibly inhibited all the parameters of sexual behaviour other than
mounting-and-intromission frequency and copulatory efficiency. The effects of
high dose SS were not due to general toxicity, liver toxicity, haemotoxicity,
stress, muscle deficiency, muscle incoordination, analgesia, hypoglycaemia or
reduction in blood testosterone level. They were due to marked sedation.
CONCLUSION: The kernel of T. catappa seeds has aphrodisiac activity and may be
useful in the treatment of certain forms of sexual inadequacies, such as
premature ejaculation. Ratnasooriya WD, et al. Effects of Terminalia
catappa seeds on sexual behavior and fertility of male rats. Asian Journal of

Turmeric taste of India.TURMERIC Efficacy of turmeric on blood sugar and polyol pathway in diabetic albino
rats.
In the traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda, several spices and herbs are
thought to possess medicinal properties. Among the spices, turmeric rhizomes
(Curcuma longa. Linn.) are used as flavoring and coloring agents in the Indian
diet everyday. In this research, we studied the effect of turmeric and its
active principle, curcumin, on diabetes mellitus in a rat model. Alloxan was
used to induce diabetes. Administration of turmeric or curcumin to diabetic rats
reduced the blood sugar, Hb and glycosylated hemoglobin levels significantly.
Turmeric and curcumin supplementation also reduced the oxidative stress
encountered by the diabetic rats. This was demonstrated by the lower levels of
TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), which may have been due to the
decreased influx of glucose into the polyol pathway leading to an increased
NADPH/NADP ratio and elevated activity of the potent antioxdiant enzyme GPx.
Moreover, the activity of SDH (sorbitol dehydrogenase), which catalyzes the
conversion of sorbitol to fructose, was lowered significantly on treatment with
turmeric or curcumin. These results also appeared to reveal that curcumin was
more effective in attenuating diabetes mellitus related changes than turmeric.

Unkei-to Japanese herbal medicine may treat infertility
The Japanese herbal medicine unkei-to may
help induce ovulation in women who have stopped menstruating and it may
normalize hormone levels in women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome or
other hormonal disorders, Japanese researchers report. Unkei-to is a combination of 12 herbal drugs, including ginseng, cinnamon
bark, angelica root, evodia fruit and ginger stem. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome develop multiple cysts on their ovaries
and also tend to be obese, develop diabetes and have excess body hair. The

VITAMIN E
We report that alpha-tocopheryl succinate, a vitamin E analogue with
pro-apoptotic properties, selectively kills cells with a malignant or
transformed phenotype, i.e. multiple haematopoietic and carcinoma cell lines,
while being non-toxic to normal, i.e. primary and non-transformed cells. These
findings strongly suggest a potential of this micronutrient in the therapy
and/or prevention of cancer without significant side-effects.
