DMAE bitartrate benefits, use for mind enhancement, does it help reverse memory loss?
DMAE is known chemically as dimethyl-amino-ethanol. DMAE has been known in Europe by the product name Deanol for more than three decades. DMAE has two methyl groups and is chemically similar to choline. DMAE has been popular for many years in those interested in improving mental alertness and clarity of thinking.

DMAE studies
Studies with DMAE go back to the 1950s. One double blind, placebo-controlled
trial performed in twenty-seven patients with severe Alzheimer's disease did not show
significant benefits (Fisman 1981). Another study on twenty-one patients with memory
deficits was also discouraging since no improvement was found in memory (Caffarra 1980).
However, DMAE was found helpful in patients with age related mental decline. DMAE was
given in a dosage of 600 mg a day for four weeks to fourteen older patients (Ferris 1977).
Ten patients improved and four were unchanged. The patients on DMAE had reduced
depression, less anxiety, and increased motivation, but they had no improvement in memory.
The researchers say, "the results thus suggest that although DMAE may not improve
memory, it may produce positive behavioral changes in some senile patients." Dementia
is a term that is now substituted for senility and is sometimes used to denote a severe
case of age related cognitive decline.
DMAE has been touted as an anti-aging nutrient
but there is no definite proof yet that oral intake of DMAE slows aging.
Benefits
Most people notice being more alert and focused within a couple of hours after
taking it. The effects can last most of the day. A few report a higher sense
of wellbeing. DMAE is recommended to be taken in the early part of
the day.
DMAE side effects
DMAE is available in dosages ranging from 100 to 400 mg. It is best to start with a
low dose, such as 50 to 150 mg since high doses can cause anxiety, restlessness, and
muscle tenseness in the neck and shoulders. DMAE taken late in the day may cause insomnia.
I took two capsules of DMAE supplement twice daily
for 3 days and found these dosages can induce irritability, overstimulation, anxiety, headaches and
stiffness in the jaw, neck, and shoulder.
Yes, these are common DMAE side effects.
Q. I thought I would relay my experience of DMAE supplement pills. A year ago I was diagnosed with mild depression with conditional mild generalised anxiety. I was prescribed 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride (generic Prozac) daily for six months. During this time I carried on in my day-today job as CEO of a small company. After six month I came off Fluoxetine (with no tapering) and all was well. I was 100% recovered. In January 2009 - 4 months after stopping Fluoxitine - I thought I would try otc DMAE supplementation - as I am 39 years old male and I felt my libido was not what it should be. I took a 15mg pill of DMAE to see whether that would help restore my libido. Within an hour my heart was racing - pulse was 90b/m resting and my blood pressure 85/132. My normal pulse at resting is about 65-70b/m and my blood pressure 68/110!! This physiological response was also accompanied by psychological changes, racing thoughts, hyperactivity, restlessness, distorted sensations (colors seemed muted and sounds much louder), increased breathing (like someone was sitting on my chest), palpitations, dry mouth and mild tachycardia. I could sense that if this continued that it would develop into anxiety and panic attack (which I was originally treated for with Fluoxetine). I took quite a few grams of Inositol and GABA with Passiflora and within a few hours the "amphetamine" type symptoms subsided - although it left me with an awful headache, dulled senses and a dry mouth. The dry mouth lasted quite a few days and the mental hyperactivity and sensory hypersensitivity for a couple of days. This is one supplement that is going straight into the trash can. It should not be available without a prescription!!
Availability
DMAE is usually sold by the name of DMAE bitartrate. A 351 mg pill of DMAE
bitartrate yields 130 mg of actual DMAE. It is also available as liquid. One
product contains 35 mg of DMAE per drop. Most users notice an effect from 60 to
150 mg of actual DMAE.

DMAE can be helpful in the elderly who have cognitive decline. This nutrient can
also be taken by an adult of any age who needs to be more focused and alert.
Studies
DMAE Enhances Mood and Alertness
There are dozens of herbs and
nutrients available in health food stores that influence mental function. One that has been popular for many years is DMAE,
which stands for dimethyl-amino-ethanol. A recent German study evaluated the
brain's electrical reaction during presentation of videoclips of 7 minute
duration in 80 subjects with borderline emotional disturbance. The researchers
recorded the different emotional states by having the subjects watch these film
excerpts. Half of the subjects were then started on a daily dose of DMAE and
the testing was repeated after 6 and 12 weeks. The testing included showing the
videoclips, filling out mood questionnaires, and also evaluating the brain's
electrical reaction through EEGs (electrodes placed on the scalp that measure
brain activity) . The results showed that those who took the DMAE daily had less
of a decrease in theta and alpha1 brain electrical activity indicating that they
were more alert. Furthermore, the questionnaires revealed that those on DMAE had
a better mood. The researchers conclude, "DMAE can be interpreted to induce a
psychophysiological state of better feeling of wellbeing on both levels of
analysis mood and electrical pattern of brain activity in subjects suffering
from borderline emotional disturbance."
Comments: Most people notice being more alert

dosages ranging from 100 to 400 mg. It is best to start with a low dose, such as
50 to 150 mg of actual DMAE since high doses can cause anxiety, restlessness, and muscle
tenseness in the neck and shoulders. DMAE taken late in the day may cause
insomnia.
Efficacy of dimethylaminoethanol containing vitamin-mineral
drug combination on EEG patterns in the presence of different emotional states.
Dimpfel W. Forschung und Entwicklung -,
Kurt-Schumacher-Str. 9, D-35440 Linden, Germany.
Eur J Med Res. 2003 May.
The psychophysiological model of provoking different emotional states by
watching film excerpts with various emotional contents was used to characterize
drug action in 80 subjects (male/female=50%) with threshold emotional
disturbance within a randomized, group-parallel, double-blind,
placebo-controlled study. Analyzing the brain's electrical reaction during
presentation of 5 videoclips of 7 min duration followed by 3 minutes pause
revealed a content specific representation of topographical frequency changes.
This procedure was repeated after 6 and 12 weeks of daily intake of a
vitamin-mineral drug combination containing dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) or placebo. Subjects taking the active drug for 3 months developed
significant less theta and alpha1 power in sensomotoric areas of the cortex. The
grade of change and statistical significance was dependend on the content of the
excerpt, but the pattern of changes in general remained the same. Since
decreases in theta and alpha1 electrical power have been associated with
increased vigilance and attention, subjects taking the drug combination
obviously were more active and felt better. - Analysis of the emotional change
in mood profile as induced by the TV session was achieved by completing two
different quenstionaires (POMS and Bf-S). Both scores revealed a better mood for
the active drug group thus corroborating the results from EEG analysis.
Therefore the vitamin-mineral drug combination containing DMAE can be
interpreted to induce a psychophysiological state of better feeling of wellbeing
on both levels of analysis mood and electrical pattern of brain activity in
subjects suffering from borderline emotional disturbance.

Q. Should DMAE pill be taken every day?
A. Our personal preference is that DMAE pills should
not be taken every day. If DMAE gives you positive benefits, you may take a
bread for a couple of days a week and if you really wanted to take another mind
booster, you could try acetyl-l-carntine.
Q. I have purchased Mind Power Rx supplement recently
and when reviewing the ingredients, I noticed that DMAE is included. When I did
a little research on the compound, I came across some interesting information
which was summed up nicely on wikipedia: Short term DMAE studies have shown an
increase in vigilance and alertness, with a positive influence on mood. Long
term studies are equivocal. Some showed dimethylaminoethanol to increase the
lifespan of animals in which it was tested, while others indicate a possible
reduction in the average life span of quail. With the uncertainty of whether
this could be extrapolated to humans, DMAE dimethylaminoethanol supplementation
is not generally recommended. It is possible that dose is a major determining
factor in the overall effects of DMAE dimethylaminoethanol - a high dose could
produce effects opposite to those sought and contribute to life-shortening. The
question is, what studies are there, or can you site that shows DMAE as safe in
spite of the research done on the Japanese quail.
A. Studies in birds regarding supplements or medicines are not
always relevant to human beings since the physiology of birds and humans are
different in many crucial ways. Dosage makes a huge difference on the benefits
or side effects of a supplement. Even a small dosage difference can shift a
supplement from a benefit to harmful effect. It is not possible to extrapolate
the dosage used in Japanese quails to that of humans. DMAE supplements are not
intended to be consumed daily for a lifetime. The amount of DMAE in Mind Power
Rx is 25 mg which is a very small amount. Mind Power Rx is not to be taken every
day but a few days a week. Studies are very expensive, cost several hundred
thousand dollars and most vitamin companies do not the funds to pay for these
studies when other companies can use the published info to sell their own DMAE
products. Supplements are not patented so it is not economically feasible to do
such DMAE studies.
Can any greater benefit be obtained by taking
centrophenoxine, which can be obtained from abroad, rather than DMAE? Thanks for
your response.
We have not seen any studies comparing the two. There are
many natural substances available here in the US without a prescription that
enhance mental function and we prefer to try them first rather than
centrophenoxine.
