acid, and review of l acetyl-l-carnitine side effects
Acetyl-l-carnitine is a stabilized form of the amino acid
metabolite L Carnitine and is
utilized in the same manner in the body. acetyl-l-carnitine plays an important role in

Benefit of acetyl-l-carnitine
The mind boosting effect of acetyl-l-carnitine is often noticed within a
few hours, or even within an hour. Most people report feeling mentally
sharper, having more focus and being more alert. Some find a mild mood
enhancement. acetyl-l-carnitine may be used as an overall mind booster. The typical dosage is 250 mg
once a day or a few times a week.

A double-blind, randomised, controlled clinical trial of acetyl-L-carnitine vs.
amisulpride in the treatment of dysthymia.
Eur Neuropsychopharmacol. 2006 May;16(4):281-7. Department of
Psychiatry, School of Medicine, Vita-Salute University San Raffaele, Milan,
Italy.
Researchers evaluated the effect of acetyl-L-carnitine ( ALCAR ) vs. amisulpride
measured by total Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score in patients with pure
dysthymia. Two hundred and four patients were randomised and treated with ALCAR
500 mg twice a day or amisulpride 50 mg u.i.d. in a double-blind study, for 12
weeks. RESULTS: A solid improvement was observed in both treatment groups
throughout the study. The results did not disclose statistically significant
differences between treatments. The greater tolerability of ALCAR is of clinical
relevance considering the chronicity of dysthymia, which often requires
prolonged treatment.
Acetyl l-carnitine for
infertility
Researchers at the
Polytechnic
University of Marche, in Italy had an inkling that supplements could make a
difference. They evaluated sixty infertile men between the ages of 20 and
40 who had poor sperm motility or movement. They gave these men the
nutrients carnitine,
acetyl l-carnitine, or a combination. The results showed that the combination
of carnitine and acetyl l-carnitine had the best outcome with improvement
noted in sperm motility and velocity. The antioxidant capacity of the
sperm fluid also increased.
It would seem reasonable for men who have
undergone a medical evaluation for infertility and have not had success
with the standard medical approach to try a combination of these two
nutrients, particularly if analysis shows their sperm do not swim well or
are slow movers. The ideal dosage is difficult to know, but a cautious approach
would be to alternate taking 200 to 300 mg of acetyl l-carnitine one day and 200 to 300 mg of carnitine
the following day. The dosage can be increased after a month or two if the results are
not adequate. Higher doses could lead to overstimulation, restlessness, and insomnia.
Acetyl-l-carnitine side
effect
Side effects of acetyl-l-carnitine include overstimulation at dosages greater
than 500 mg. Nausea is another acetyl-l-carnitine side effect.
How often to take an acetyl-carnitine
supplement
Acetyl-l-Carnitine 300 mg is a potent mind booster and antioxidant. Most
people find one capsule is the right dose while some people may find the
occasional use of 2 capsules helpful. Acetylcarnitine increases alertness
and focus. It would be best not to take a capsule with other brain
boosting supplements due to possible overstimulation. One option is to
alternate the use of acetylcarnitine one day with Mind Power Rx the next
day, or alternate with other brain supplements such as DMAE, choline,
ginkgo, etc. Doses above 500 mg may, in some people, lead to
overstimulation, insomnia, and nausea. For long term use one capsule 3
times a week with a week off each month is a good option. Acetylcarnitne
can be taken with small doses of other supplements such as vitamins E and
C, and it can be used together with fish oils. Many products on the market
have acetylcarnitine together with alpha lipoic acid and are promoted for
antiaging purposes. Be careful using high amounts of these combinations
since they can keep you awake at night, and shallow sleep is certainly not
helpful for longevity purposes. We would not recommend taking more than 10
to 30 mg of R lipoic acid or 20 to 60 mg of regular alpha lipoic acid when
combined with 300 mg of acetylcarnitine.

Acetyl-l-carnitine study
The association of acetyl-l-carnitine and nicotinamide remits the experimental
diabetes in mice by multiple low-dose streptozotocin.
Pancreas. 2006 Nov;33(4):403-11. Centro de Investigaciones Endocrinologicas
(CEDIE-CONICET), Htal. de Ninos R. Gutierrez, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
We studied the effect of acetyl-l-carnitine plus nicotinamide on murine diabetes
mellitus induced by multiple low doses of streptozotocin. Male C57BL/6J inbred
mice were injected intraperitoneally with citrate buffer or streptozotocin (40
mg/kg) for 5 consecutive days, followed by injections of saline solution or
acetyl-l-carnitine plus nicotinamide (50 + 25 mg/kg) from days 6 to 110. Four
groups were studied: normal control mice (C), treated normal control mice (TC),
diabetic mice (D), and treated diabetic mice (TD). The treatment with acetyl-l-carnitine
plus nicotinamide induced remission of autoimmune type 1 diabetes in mice
produced by multiple low doses of streptozotocin.
Acetyl-l-carnitine questions
Q. What is acetyl-l-carnitine arginate?
A. We are not familiar with acetyl-l-carnitine arginate.
Q. Is headache a l acetyl-l-carnitine side effect?
A. In a few people, headache may be a cause of a high dose of
l acetyl-l-carnitine side effect.
Q. Should acetyl l-carnitine be taken in
conjunction with slpha lipoic acid since the latter helps transports the former
into the mitochondria ? If so, to my knowledge, since one is water soluble and
the other fat soluble should they be taken seperately. Also, should acety l-carnitine
be taken on an empty stomach while alpha lipoic acid with food to prevent
stomach upset?

combined with 300 mg of acetylcarnitine. There is no human evidence that
the combination of these two nutrients is better than either alone. Even if the
combination is preferable, we have no idea of the ideal dosage, and it could be
vastly different between different people. Both acetyl-l-carnitine and alpha
lipoic acid can be taken with food to reduce nausea, but if one wishes to feel
the mental stimulating effects more clearly, they can be taken on an empty
stomach.
Q. Does acetyl-l-carnitine help
Impotence?
A. It is possible that regular use of acetyl-l-carnitine may help
erectile function in some users, but this nutrient is not specific to erection
improvement as are other aphrodisiac herbs. For sexual enhancement, see
tongkat ali website or
yohimbe article.
Q. What is the usual starting dose for acetyl-l-carnitine?
A. The usual staring dosage for acetyl-l carnitine can range from
100 to 300 mg.
